The Refuge is a youth ministry under the First Baptist Church in Leland, NC. They seek to come alongside parents and lead students to know God and to make Him known.
Psalm 41:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This scripture is what The Refuge uses as a foundation for their ministry. Madelyn messaged me looking to incorporate this concept into a identity that would inspire a culture of understanding and growth, while still appealing to the younger generation.
A church seeking a logo that visually represents a key scripture for it's youth ministry.
For this project I wanted to pack as much meaning as possible into one mark. Using the scripture The Refuge had provided, I created a concept that not only embodies Psalm 46:1 but also gives an easy to understand diagram of what the church represents.
I used an image of the actual church to craft a unique illustration of the building that would be recognizable to locals in the area. This hand-drawn look conveys a welcoming and honest feeling, while still looking refined and thoughtful. I then created a landscape for the church to live in, and paired a typeface that matched the style.
Creating visuals that fit the occasion
After sorting out the logo mark, I searched for imagery that aligned with the illustration, while fitting with the feeling of the brand. Grainy, retro aesthetics seemed to match best with the handmade look of the logo.
